2021 is finally behind us now, and we need to look ahead for what might come. What I see first is that the Omicron variant is gaining a lot of traction, but let’s push that into a dimly lit corner of my mind until later. Then I see a lot of new avenues the tech world is breaking into, and a lot of them are VR / AR oriented. With social media platforms having spent much of 2020 and 2021 testing new virtual apps of the technology, with Snapchat leading the charge on that front, it’s fun to imagine what 2022 will look like from a purely visual perspective. As technology continues to permeate real life, how much will these new products and advancements challenge our senses? Well, Depositphotos, a very popular online image source, is here to answer that question. Consulting with various experts in the field, the online platform has put together an infographic outlining the eight main trends that we can expect in the times to come.

Psychedelic art has been around since the ’60s (thanks LSD, I guess?), But the accessible nature of modern software such as Adobe Photoshop, combined with easily accessible 3D resources online, allows an individual to do a lot of things. Artists such as Beeple have made entire careers in psychedelic art, but there has been a relative rarity of such individuals. However, with artistic sensibilities moving more and more towards abstraction, there is much more psychedelic art that we can expect online in the near future.

One feature that I’m not particularly excited about, but one that can be expected nonetheless, is the future integration of AI-generated music in the future. While AI-generated content has already carved out a fun little niche on the internet, with users using technology to create bizarre sketch scripts or visual arts, the music is not very mainstream. However, it’s just easier to make music than paying someone else to make that music for you, and with content creators growing at a pretty impressive rate, there isn’t much. – something that can be done in the end. It’s just a source of minor annoyance that with pop music already having such an industry-generated feel, the AI ​​generation will only further remove musicians from the creative process. We need more individuals who actively interact with the field, not less.

The infographic also predicts that the Y2K aesthetic will make a return in 2022, which means we’ll return to the visual sensitivities of big, bold lettering, neon lights, and just a general ’90s vibe that’s fading away. Which, even as an individual who spent much of his youth in the 90s, I couldn’t be happier about. Now if only we could put Outkast back together.

Speaking of old-fashioned trends returning to center stage, we’ll see a new growth in more simplistic photographic sensibilities. In stark contrast to the Y2K designs the posters will develop, the images will be simple, minimalist, with a touch of natural lighting and candor.
