Flames show killer instinct to win 10th straight game

The Calgary Flames hosted the Winnipeg Jets on a Family Day matinee, looking to tie a franchise record and win their 10th straight game. Jacob Markstrom got the start in net against Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets.

Game summary

Afternoon games have seemed to get away from the Flames in recent years, but this game was close for 60 minutes. Both teams clogged the neutral zone and gave very few quality chances.

The first period was scoreless and extremely close. Five penalties were called and the Flames had a brief 5-for-3 to finish first and held the lion’s share of shots and chances, but couldn’t convert any of them.

The second period had more action. Just over a minute into the second period, the Flames opened the scoring on the power play. Sean Monahan scored his eighth goal of the year and his first since Jan. 24. Luckily for the Jets, Dominic Toninato scored the tying goal midway through the period, and it was tied again heading into the third period.

Elias Lindholm also scored, but the goal was disallowed on a coach’s challenge for offside.

The third period went like the previous two, except the Jets stepped on the gas. They dominated possession and chances for most of the period, but Markstrom closed the door the whole time. In the last minute, Lindholm collected his goal, scoring the go-ahead with just 47 seconds left. A challenge from the coach was issued again on that goal, this time for goaltender interference, but the goal stood and the FLames had the lead.

Tyler Toffoli added an empty net to seal the deal soon after and the Flames earned their 10th straight win. Lindholm’s goal extended his scoring streak to eight games, which ties a franchise record. The Flames will be looking to set a new franchise record on Thursday against the Vancouver Canucks.
