Limits on voice imitation too

In 2020, a Stanford study showed how the technology produced error rates for members of some African American communities that were nearly double those of non-African American users.
After the study was published, Microsoft learned during preliminary tests that its speech-to-text technology did not sufficiently account for the diversity of speech among people from different backgrounds and from different regions.
Following a review by a sociolinguist, he set out to expand his data collection efforts while researching the best way to collect data from communities in a way that appropriately and respectfully engages them.
An evolving set of guidelines for AI
In these initiatives, Microsoft has been guided by its Responsible AI Standard, the second iteration of its policy that aims to limit product development toward outcomes that are both beneficial and equitable.
